Johnson Park - Palo Alto

The 2.5 acre Johnson Park covers the entire block from Waverly and Everett to Kipling and Hawthorne in the north downtown neighborhood. Almost always busy with young children in the play area, under the watchful eyes of parents, these pictures taken on an early winter morning show the park uncommingly empty.

The entire block of land for Johnson Park was purchased by the city of Palo Alto in 1968. The houses on each corner were torn down and replaced with mini parks. Over several years all of the houses were torn down and the entire block became Johnson Park. It was originally called Downtown Park North but was renamed in 1986 for Dr. Edith Eugenie Johnson, a physician who lived and worked at 375 Hawthorne, and helped bring over 3,500 babies into the world.
